The Hinterland Dress by Sew Liberated
When Tori from The Doing Things Blog and Sara from The Sara Project announced they were hosting a Hinterland Dress Sew-Off, I was so excited because I had been wanting to make this dress for awhile, and sometimes I need a little kick in the pants to push things to the top of my list. :)
This pattern is so great because there are so many different ways to make it your own. I opted to make mine with the short sleeve and a full button placket. There are options for partial placket, 3/4 sleeves, sleeveless, different skirt lengths, etc etc. But really, this pattern is a great starting off point to get creative and take it anywhere you want it to go.
I thought long and hard about what fabric I wanted to use for this dress. I opted for this embroidered light-weight black denim from JoAnn. I think this fabric is so fun and unique, I knew I would regret it if I didn't use it for something, and the Hinterland seemed like the perfect choice.
When I make this dress again, I think I will use a flowy white fabric with big wooden buttons, and maybe make the front neckline a v-neck? Like I said before, there are so many ways to make this dress your own!
I didn't make any changes to the pattern this time, but I did have to get creative with my fabric. I was worried that the bulkiness of the fabric would make it hard to sew the button placket and the tie in the back. Luckily, on the selvage end of the fabric there was a good 5-6 inches of plain fabric without the embroidery on it. I ended up using that for the button placket and ties. I think doing that ended up being the best decision because it broke up the busy pattern on the front and also showed off the buttons nicely.
Speaking of buttons, I had some fun wooden buttons in my stash that I sewed on in sets of three. I thought that was a fun and different way of doing buttons, that I'd never done before. It adds a unique visual element to the dress, which I love.
